I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the water main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any important things from the area, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
